International Graduate Student Information
For information concerning application procedures for admission to Honours, Masters, or Ph.D programmes in the Department of Economics, applicants should refer to the International Students section on the University's website which contains information including the following:
- Applying for Admission;
- Costs;
- Accommodation;
- Visas;
- International Scholarships.
Application forms can be downloaded from this site. Applicants should deal directly with the International office of the University regarding any of the above matters. Please note that graduate course programmes begin in semester 1 (starting in February in any year); admission is not possible at other times.
Because of difficulties in assessing the academic background of applicants holding qualifications from non-New Zealand universities, the Department of Economics requires the following information to be supplied to the International office of the University before formal consideration for admission will be given.
- Proof (on the basis of demonstrated successful results from relevant TOEFL or IELTS tests) of competence in the use of the English language.
- Verified Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test results. The general test consists of three sections; viz, verbal, quantitative, and analytical. If you have not taken the GRE tests you may obtain information from the GRE website. Please note that the subject GRE test for economics is regrettably, no longer available, otherwise it would have also been specified as a requirement. In these circumstances, the Department reserves the right to administer a subject test for applicants who meet acceptable standards with respect to all other requirements.
- Verified transcripts of the applicant's formal academic qualifications, plus detailed course outlines for the most advanced economics courses taken by the applicant.
- A detailed summary of the specific most advanced degree programme in economics undertaken by the applicant.
Details of the Department's graduate programme may be found under Teaching Programme of the Department's homepage.
